Packing cubes, honestly assessed
Cubes organise a bag. They do not create space, and compression cubes cost you more volume than they save.

Packing cubes are sold on the promise of fitting more into the same bag. They do not do that. What they do is make a bag navigable.
The compression claim
A compression cube squeezes air out of soft clothing and then adds its own fabric, zips and seams back into the bag. On our scales the net volume saving across a four-day pack was under two percent, and the creasing was considerably worse.
What cubes are genuinely good at
Finding a shirt on day three without unpacking. Separating worn from clean. Lifting an entire section out at a hotel without disturbing the rest. Those are real benefits and they justify a set on their own.
How many you need
Three. One for tops, one for everything else, one small one for cables and chargers. Sets of six exist for the same reason knife blocks hold eight knives.
